Here's the restoration process I'm doing to the car. It's not going to be a full "frame off" restoration because I plan on driving the car. No sense in having a cleaned and painted undercarriage when it's just going to get dirty again.

February 2009

I began the repaint procedure by removing the complete interior of the car... except the dash. Even though under the car looked good under the rug on the inside was a different story. The heater case was leaking and allowed water to enter the passenger area and under the rug. Trapped there, the water spread all over and allowed the floor pans to get surface rust on them. I cleaned them up and welded a few pin hole spots that was bad and put in two small patches.

BEFORE

AFTER

March 15th 2009

After the getting the floor fixed I started working on the firewall and trunk area's where some surface rust had started to emerge. I also had to find where the water leak was so I just decided to pull the entire front clip off and reseal all the body seams and the A/C case. I sandblasted the surface rust off and applied paint. After that I let the car sit out in the weather and checked to see if any leaks were still there. I still had one leak at the bottom of the firewall where the floor pan and the door hinge post meet. It's amazing that something like this would probably be overlooked due to old seam sealer.

March 29th 2009

Here you can see the old cracked up seam sealer around the trunk area. All of this was removed, sand blasted and new seam sealer applied. Here is the rear section of the car all cleaned up!

BEFORE

AFTER

April 7th 2009

I took both doors off and again cleaned the seam sealer off. I also had to repair a couple of small rust holes that developed under the door. The door is in really nice shape although it appears to be in bad shape before cleaning and sandblasting.

AFTER

April 12 2009

I finally got some primer in the door jambs and on the doors. The drivers door needs a new skin or a replacement door. The lady did tell me that she hydroplaned and hit a mail box on the drivers door.

AFTER

April 25 2009

This weekend resulted in completely removing all the paint on the roof and the rear quarter panels down to the bare metal. It's good to see the body in excellent shape on the outside! I also removed all the paint from the replacement trunk lid. The original trunk lid had rust coming through the rear section. The quarter panels had no signs of rust other than a spot where the body side molding was stuck on. I just sand blasted that area and filled the small pits in with glazing putty. Sandblasting really work well to remove all the rust where sand paper can't get.

BEFORE

AFTER

I also helped stiffen the roof and body some by installing some X bracing behind the rear seat and above the headliner. I'm not sure if this will work but I guess it can't hurt to try...

Here are the two fenders and the hood stripped to the bare metal. The fenders are in EXCELLENT shape! No repair work needed to be done at all. The hood will need some putty in the usual place where people push down on it to shut it. That happens when the hood doesn't shut all the way and the person pushes down several times to force it to shut. Almost every Regal has these bends if you look close enough.

June 22nd 2009

I've taken about a month to build an extension to my car port. It's about 4 feet deeper than it originally was built. As you can tell by the photo's, I've made me a temporary paint booth out of the car port. I have two 1999 Dodge Intrepid cooling fans mounted to the doors to help keep the air moving and the overspray out during painting. They work pretty good! I also put up plastic on the inside to keep dust and bugs to minimum...at least I hope it does. When I get ready for spraying the final paint I'll be putting a sheet of plastic on the floor so I won't be painting on a dirt floor.

I now have the car painted with "fast filling" primer. So now it's time to hand sand the entire car once again before spraying the base-coat/clear-coat.

BEFORE

AFTER

June 28th 2009

I've finally finished getting the paint booth ready! Here are some pictures of what it looks like with everything ready. The rubber and plywood on the floor helps keep the plastic floor from rising up when I turn on the ventilation fans on. Looks like it will be July 4th weekend to finally get some base coat and clear coat on the car! This date falls on the EXACT date EXACTLY 5 years ago when I painted my 78 Malibu....which was July 4th 2004!

BEFORE

AFTER

June 30th 2009

It's finally SILVER! Actually, only the base cost is applied! It looks like I laid the paint down pretty evenly. I'm going to take the car out in the sun before I clear coat it just to make sure it isn't striped.

July 4th 2009

Today I clear coated the car. It was hard to see how much clear was going on the paint so I have a couple of runs. All of the runs are at the bottom of the passenger quarter panel and the rear section of the hood bulge. There are a coupe of very light "sags" but they'll be easy to get out after I wet sand the entire car and buff it.

Time to start assembling the car!

7-6-2009 to 7-11-2009

I wet sanded the body of the car, the doors and the two front fenders. I also cleaned the inside of the car out along with the trunk using the water hose! I installed the doors and bumper fillers on the rear.

July 16th to 17th 2009

I removed the window regulators so I could clean up and lubricate the tracks. I also added "helper springs" to the regulators so the windows will go up faster and take some of the load off the motor itself. When the regulators were out this allowed me to vacuum out the inside of the doors and spray undercoating at the bottoms.

I also recovered the rear package shelf and added some padding to the bottom of it similar to the factory.

I also added some insulating "jute" to the roof, on the sides and behind the rear seat. Hopefully, this will make the AC/Heater more efficient. It will also make the interior quieter.

I got the new door handles and polished door lock cylinders installed. I also installed a new turn/cruise signal lever.

July 18th 2009

I installed the interior and added some trim overlays to the dash and console. WOW....looking GOOD!

July 18th 2009

More pictures of the interior and some of the trim pieces I polished.

All of the door hinges were taken completely apart and rebuilt.

Just to play around a little while i was cleaning the dash and vents, I installed a blue LED dash light strip. The original bulbs emit a yellowish glow that doesn't look very good in my opinion. The blue courtesy lights are temporary until I get my white LED's in the mail.

The rear of the car is almost complete with the exception of the lower trunk lid chrome.

Here are some pictures of the car when the engine was about to be removed. I pulled the entire wiring harness out so I can clean the firewall and paint it. I also tore down the engine and plan to rebuild it. I'm uncertain if I'm going to put some upgrades in it out not...probably so...hehe!

The cleaning/sandblasting/painting of all the brackets is done. Here they all are hanging on the line to dry.

August 16th 2009:

Today my nephew and I cleaned the frame of the car and painted it. It was a big improvement over what it used to look like.

September 22nd 2009:

Tonight I pulled the steering column out and painted it. While it was out I installed a new column to firewall seal. I also installed the new leather wrapped steering wheel.

BEFORE

AFTER

September 5th 2009:

I've had some trim pieces sent out to get re-chromed. They looked really nice and since they are actually chrome and not anodized or polished aluminum, I can just wipe them off with soap and water and they shine like new again! Plans are to have the other pieces sent out to be re-chromed also.

September 6th 2009:

I've finally got the front end of the car back on! I'm cleaning up almost everything while I out it together. I also changed the side marker lenses to LED's. This made the entire lense light up evenly when turned on. Check out the before and after pictures.

October 1st 2009:

I haven't done a lot to the car in the past month. I've been busy with other things in life.

Here are the latest pictures. I just put the front grill on...looks really nice! Also bought some HID lights and some gauges.

 October 18th 2009:

I got several things some to the Turbo T this weekend.

I've installed a re-chromed rear bumper...WOW...looks GREAT!

I've installed the windshield and the rear window. I also had a friend tint the windows to 35%. I put on all the chrome body moldings on the car around the windshield, rear glass, upper door and around the side glass on the door. (I had ALL the moldings re-chromed by a chrome shop.)

I've installed all the door and side glass rubber seals and adjusted the windows so no air will leak. I also put the trunk seal on too.

I've mounted the HID ballast boxes behind the front bumper fillers after making some mounting brackets. The ones they send with the kits are a joke...lol!

December 8th 2009:

I've been a little slack in working on the Turbo T. However, I do have the engine built and installed in the car. Although not finished, it's coming together. It's clean, clean, clean and that's very time consuming!

I  also got my front bumper back from the chrome shop!

As of January, I've driven the car about 7 miles...without a hood. Also, there are some miscellaneous things I have to finish up before I start driving it on a regular basis.

Here it is at the end of January 2010.  The car is almost finished with the exception of a few details.

I've put on the emblems and moldings to finally finish the outside of the car. The inside is also finished!
